Governor pressure solenoid and sensor upgrade kit

This solenoid and sensor kit includes the following items:

  • Rostra dual pack solenoid – 3-4 and lockup
  • Rostra 50185 HD governor pressure solenoid. The BorgWarner 50185 is now packaged by Rostra. Same exactly solenoid, different package.
  • Rostra governor pressure sensor - transducer temperature sensor
  • Output speed sensor
  • Sonnax updated 3-4 accumulator spring
  • Governor pressure solenoid body gasket

It is very common for these transmissions to have electronic failures. This kit will restore your transmission electronic function to better than factory level. The heavy-duty Rostra-BorgWarner 50185 governor pressure solenoid included in this kit is a huge upgrade over OEM. The added 3-4 accumulator spring in this kit is also a major upgrade. These transmissions commonly had broken springs, which can cause 3-4 shift problems, or even transmission failure.

Typical problem: Wrong gear start. Starts in 2nd or 3rd gear.

Possible DTC – Diagnostic Trouble Codes

  • P0748 – Transmission control relay circuit, governor pressure solenoid circuit
  • P0753 – 3-4 solenoid circuit, transmission control relay circuit
  • P1762 – Governor pressure sensor offset volts high or low
  • P1763 – Governor pressure voltage too high
  • P1764 – Governor pressure voltage too low

Additionally, you can add the following upgrades to this already amazing kit:

The shift solenoids and sensors contained within this kit can all be installed with the transmission in the vehicle during a routine fluid change. As an option, the needed gaskets and transmission filter can be added to this set.

This electrical upgrade package works in the following applications:

  • Ram Truck – 1500, 3.9L, some 5.2L
  • Ram Van – 1500, 3.9L, some 5.2L
  • Dakota 3.9L, 5.2L
  • Durango 3.9L, 5.2L
  • Jeep Grand Cherokee 5.2L, 3.1L 1993-2000
  • Jeep Grand Cherokee 4.0L 1994-2004
  • Mitsubishi Pickup 1993-1996

This full electronics set will work in the following years: 1993, 1994, 1995, 1996, 1997, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, and 2004.

If the transmission is not burned and you continue to have issues, you could have a stuck shift valve. In these cases, you would be required to remove the valve body and free the stuck valve to fix the problem.

The governor pressure solenoid contained in this kit is packed in fluid from the factory. This is the only way to ensure they are functioning upon installation, with no sticking valves. It should be noted that changing a solenoid on an already burned transmission will not fix the transmission. If this item does not fix your problem, it will not mean that this item is defective, but more likely you have a problem that needs a different solution. If your fluid is burned or your transmission is slipping, this solenoid will not fix the problem. A full rebuild will be needed and at that point, after the rebuild, this new solenoid kit should be installed.

Working great the just getting a little delay from third to second some times, pro I need to reset the computer again, the only thing is that kit comes with the wrong pan gasket.

215k on the transmission, was having intermittent issues, total loss of 1st gear while in drive. Code came back for gov pressure sensor and 3-4. Replaced these evething with this kit zero issues. Shifts like butter and now I got first again! Fantastic product/kit for upgrading the trans without doing a full blown rebuild.

2004 Grand Cherokee Special Edition 2WD
Purchased WJ used with approx 175k miles on odometer. Previous owners were NOT very maintenance intensive, if you know what I mean. Immediately dropped trans pan for filter and dirty fluid change. Transmission operated fine, shifts were a little slow and/or sluggish when cold and I discovered the torque converter lockup wasn't working, but otherwise solid. Fast forward 4 years and we are at 215k miles. Decide it's time for another transmission service. So I decide it is the perfect time to fix the lingering issues. In all fairness I'm a decent weekend mechanic or as someone else said I know enough to be dangerous. Major component replacements, no problem. Digging into the internals of a unit like a transmission, well that's a completely different beast. That being said, taking my time, consulting a lot of online tutorials and reading up on recommendations from those who have done this before I was able to complete this job in a long afternoon. I pro-actively added the 3/4 spring (which I found broken upon valve body removal, like 95% of the 42re's out there) and the upgraded parking rod spring retainer. The kit contained everything needed; the quality is obviously above OEM standards. I did take the extra step of adjusting the forward and rear bands to factory specs since I was right there. Why not? Once back together and re-filled (don't forget check fluid at operating temp in neutral, not in park!!!) the difference was immediate. Shifts are smooth and crisp, rpm's over the entire operating range seems to have dropped and torque converter lockup is back!!! Huge success. Shifts like a transmission with 15k instead of 215k. Can't say enough about this product. So much so I intend to perform the same process using this kit on my other 2004 WJ in the near future. Much cheaper than a new transmission! One item of note, if your WJ is 4wd, step #1 - drop that front driveshaft. Impossible to get enough room otherwise. Huge thanks to OPT, y'all are a solid outfit.

2003 WJ Tranny fix
This kit was easy to install and fixed my shifting issues. Bought the jeep cheap cause of shifting issues. It was starting in second and would take forever to shift into OD. Swapped solenoids, pressure switch and found a broken 3-4 spring and now she shifts great. Would definitely recommend this kit for anyone with similar shifting issues. Well worth the money!!!

2000 Jeep WJ
Great kit. Be aware these parts are a little different from OEM, and can be installed incorrectly. There are three grooves on the governor pressure solenoid (OEM has two), make sure to put the heat shield in the top groove closest to the solenoid. You will hear a distinct click when you push the shield and solenoid together. Also, on the Borg Warner governor pressure solenoid, the electrical connector is 180 degrees opposite the OEM connection. You must rotate the connector in order to get it to properly lock. Hopefully, this saves someone the frustration of having to drop the pan a second time and taking things apart.

42re A500 Solenoid upgrade kit
Product came packed well. I ordered an additive and it came in a zip lock bag. Install wasn't too bad. Had to redo one solenoid as it has one more groove that the original and I installed it wrong. Bottom line is it worked for me. I have overdrive and 1st again.
